  • NCECA Exhibits: Chris Cooley and The Cooley Gallery

As over 6,000 people stream into Pittsburgh for this year’s NCECA Conference, the scope of interest in the ceramic arts and the diversity of makers, teachers, and collectors will be evident.  Standard Ceramic’s NCECA Exhibits will include the work of former Washington Redskins Chris Cooley, a man in whom the power of creativity could not be squelched.  This owner of The Cooley Gallery in Leesburg, Virginia returned to an early love after nine years in major league football.  His The Cooley Gallery exhibit will showcase his functional pieces.

  • NCECA Exhibits: University Shipping Containers Shows

Enriching the exhibits in the Standard Ceramic facilities will be eight additional shows by university faculty and students.  Representing current education in the ceramic arts, eight universities will showcase work in special shipping containers.  These “pop-up” spaces will be located in a parking lot adjacent to Standard Ceramic.  Visitors can stroll through each structure, viewing the work of noted ceramic educators and their students.  Combined with the featured shows, the university exhibits will enrich and complete the NCECA visitor’s experience of the full range of ceramic work in the United States in 2018.

  • NCECA Exhibits: Kyle and Kelly Phelps: Working Class Narratives

The ceramic arts, along with most visual arts, tend to be a solitary pursuit – one artist giving form to a personal creative idea.  Collaboration is not the hallmark of potters.  For artists Kelly and Kyle Phelps, twin brothers whose lifelong alliance has carried them along parallel paths, working independently makes no sense.  These Ohio artists will bring their representations of industrial workers to Standard Ceramic’s production facility-turned art gallery for the NCECA Exhibits.

  • NCECA Exhibits: A Longtime Friendship: Jack Troy and Kevin Crowe

Though potters Jack Troy and Kevin Crowe are based 275 miles apart, they share a long history of collaboration and friendship.  Visitors to Standard Ceramic’s NCECA Exhibits will see a sampling of their work in a space that shares the closeness of this alliance.  In a small office space at ClayPlace@Standard, converted to a mini-gallery, Troy and Crowe will tuck a selection of their smaller pieces into an intimate setting that enhances the personal, not only of each artist’s relationship with his work, but of their relationship to each other.
